Vision and Ethos
We are a Maintained Community Nursery School. This means that we serve everyone in our community and do not try to attract a particular cohort or type of child or family. We aim to be fully inclusive and meet each child’s needs to the very best of our ability. This includes children with SEND, very able children, those with medical needs and children from culturally and economically diverse backgrounds. We tailor-make our curriculum based on the needs of the individual children who attend and so our offer changes depending on these needs.
Relationships are central to our practice and we focus a great deal on getting these right – with and between; children, parents, families, staff and others in our community and beyond (such as NYCC / Support Services and believe it or not Ofsted inspectors….).

We expect that every child will make the best possible progress and we aim to identify and ameliorate any possible barriers that they face. This is especially pertinent following the pandemic. We also aim to support families in understanding what they can do to support their children and act as a hub of knowledge to sign-post families to other areas of support should this be needed.

We believe that we are a “Learning Community” and this includes our staff team and that our practice must continue to develop by interrogating what current research tells us about how young children learn best.
Aims
Our aim is to provide a stimulating and inspiring environment where each child is independent, valued, challenged and feels safe.
We will provide this by:

-
Following and referring to our 'Code for behaviour' throughout the whole nursery setting
-
Working with parents as partners to establish positive relationships.
-
Developing child-led learning that is play based
-
Putting the child at the centre of the planning, observation and assessment cycle
-
Ensuring equality of opportunity and regard for all our children through the encouragement of positive self-esteem, self-confidence and behaviour
-
Utilising our unique partnership with the children’s centre and the wider community
-
Celebrating the achievements and successes of all our children and staff
-
Maintaining a leadership team that challenges and supports
-
Creating a well-resourced environment in which children are engaged and feel safe to take risks
-
Ensuring diversity is celebrated
-
Providing well qualified, positive and caring staff
-
Ensuring all children are safe, protected and secure.
This Mission Statement and aims was developed through consultation with management, staff, parents, children, governors and representatives from the wider community.

We asked our staff team to share their thoughts about Brougham Street Community Nursery School and what makes us special. The result is the yellow word cloud. The larger the word the more often it was shared.
